This artwork is about affirming what we (should) know now – that girls (and anyone) can achieve much of what they set their sights on in life. The little girl climbing represents the determination and resilience we must possess to reach for what we want in life.
The little bird looking up is symbolic of the height this little girl has reached already. He symbolises a halfway point in the journey – where (I feel) it is important to pause and appreciate the effort you have made to come this far. This is the sweet spot, where we appreciate the journey as our lived experiences.
The colourful background represents the segmented variations of what we experience, and the many choices we have.
The tapestry, rich in choices and experiences along the way, is what makes the journey worth it. Our dreams and goals are the impetus for change. The experiences while working to achieve these goals are life. Don’t take a straight path, and don’t forget to look back, to fully embrace this wonderful life we are gifted.
This piece is a part of the 2026 International Women's Day Exhibition 'Her Voice: Stories of Strength & Identity'.
