Made during a period of personal retreat, reflection and restoration, Deep Breath Out was made in response to its companion/sister piece Armada. 

As women, we are too-often expected to be all things to all people, including to ourselves. This piece celebrates those moments of letting go where we can truly breathe, to exist only for ourselves without the need to define that moment. 

The flash of hot pink serves as a quiet meditation on the notion that while we are who we are because of those who we are connected to, those we love and those who love us back; at the end of the day we are the only person who can define our true self and purpose.

I hope that in its eventual home, it will remind its collector to embrace those moments where you melt into the couch, close your eyes for a moment to reflect, recede and just be.

The title for the work is taken from a song of the same name by women-led Melbourne-based punk band Cable Ties. This song and their album All Her Plans also inspired this work as well as inspiring the painting Armada.
