Pencil and Liquid Graphite on Paper
Artwork size: 765 x 560 mm
Outer frame size: 980 x 780 mm
Framed with a simple white matboard and black frame.
The starting point for the drawing. Cloudbusting is the lyrics to the Kate Bush song of the
same name. Snippets of the lyrics are visible in the background of the drawing. I often
‘steal’ song lyrics that have evolved meaning to me. Although the song is actually about
the relationship between philosopher Wilhelm Reich and his son Peter, I see overlaps with
the relationship between myself and my daughter, the subject of the portrait.
Rainy weather holds particular importance to us ‘every time it rains you’re here in my
head’ is a lyric of the song. It was raining on the day she was born. Watching and
walking in the rain is a favourite bonding activity for both of us. The source imagery is a
phone photo taken on one of these walks- she took a moment to breathe in the weather.
Another important phrase from the song is ‘I don’t know when, but saying it can even
make it happen’. I view this line as a form of manifestation, in this instance, for my young
daughter to find her way and excel in whatever path she chooses in life. Aspirations and
desire for my children are a recurring theme in my artworks.
