This painting tells the story of Gutharragudu, or Shark Bay - Amy's ancestral Country, where the deep blue sea gently meets the red heart of the desert. It is a sacred place, alive with old stories, ancient footsteps, and the ever-present spirit of our Ancestors.
The ocean, painted in rich swirling blues and whites, holds memories of the dugong, the turtle, and the shark - guardians of our saltwater dreaming. The shoreline is where alt meets sand, symbolising balance and harmony, a meeting place for people and spirit. Here, we gather, fish, and listen to the whisper of the waves - messages from the Dreaming.
The circles and flowing patterns in warm ochres represent meeting places, songlines, and journeys across Country. They show how we move with purpose, connected to the land and to each other. The green river-like tracks are life-giving creeks and bush pathways, cutting through the desert and nourishing the land.
Footprints travel across the sand, tracing old trade routes and the movements of our people - always returning to family, to story, to home. In the centre, the large U shaped symbol holds space for a deep gathering place, where stories are shared, and our connection to Country is passed on.
This piece is apart of the 2025 NAIDOC Exhibition.
